The Tay, a famous salmon river, rises in the Highlands and flows down into the centre of Scotland through Dunkeld, Perth and Dundee. It is the longest river in Scotland and the seventh longest in the UK. The Tay drains much of the lower region of the Highlands, its source being high on the slopes of Beinn Laoigh. Most of the original town was destroyed during the Battle of Dunkeld when, in August 1689, the 26th Foot successfully fought the Jacobites. Holes made by musket-ball strikes during the battle can still be seen in the walls of the Cathedral. The alignment of the town was radically altered in 1809 by the building of a new stone bridge over the River Tay by Thomas Telford at the east end of the town, and the laying out of a new street at right angles to the old alignment.
