Saint Petersburg (tr.: "Sankt-Peterburg") is a city and a federal subject of Russia located on the Neva River at the east end of the Gulf of Finland on the Baltic Sea. St. Petersburg's informal name, "Piter" , is based on truncated by people difficult German speech old city name Питер-Бурх. The city's other names were Sankt-Piter-Burh (1703), Petrograd (1914–1924) and Leningrad (1924–1991).
