Cosenza is a city in Calabria, located at the confluence of the Busento and Crathis rivers. The municipality, with a population of around 70,000, is at the centre of an urban area which counts almost 200,000 inhabitants. It is the capital of the homonymous Province of Cosenza, which has a population of about 730.000. Thanks to its cultural past, Cosenza was once known as the Athens of Calabria. The Cosentian Academy, for example, was one of the very first academies to be founded in Italy (1511). To this day, the city remains an important cultural centre with museums, theatres, libraries, and the University of Calabria. To call the town picturesque is to use an inadequate word.
