This is probably the best view available of the whole of the village of Val d'Isere, overlooking the Solaise ski lifts from town. There aren't many locations to take a view such as this, which really gives you an idea of what the conditions are like in the resort... The left-most distant mountains is Le Fornet, which leads round to Solaise (the main 'hill' in the middle). The valley in the middle of the image is the Manchet Valley, with some of the best off-piste skiing to be had up this way. To the right is the foot of the Bellevarde ski area & La Face.

Further information about Val d'Isère

Val-d'Isère is a famous ski resort and a commune located in the Savoie "département", in France, 5 km (3 miles) from the border with Italy. Population (1999): 1,628. It is on the border of the Vanoise National Park created in 1963. The Face du Bellevarde was the scene of the men's downhill race as part of the 1992 Winter Olympics. Val-d'Isère will host the FIS Alpine World Ski Championships 2009. The skiing: Val-d'Isère is most recognisable by its charming "chalet" architecture. Along with nearby Tignes the area forms part of the "l'Espace Killy", the self-titled "Most Beautiful Ski Area in the World." Beauty aside, the combined space is one of the largest ski areas in the world. The glacier de pissaillas (Pissaillas Glacier) offers summer skiing, as well as the usual winter fare. Summer skiing has not operated recently as the glacier has shrunk due to the effects of climate change. Snow cannons are placed on certain slopes to accommodate heavy skiing.
